Selected from over 250 interviews, "War In The Air" tells the story of the war in the words of the people who fought it, who designed and built the aircraft, and who serviced and armed them. Their accounts reveal the divesity of people's experience of the war. Factory workers built aircraft, but also manned the Home Guard, firewatched and helped with the rescue services. Aircrew experienced the thrills and danger of combat and risked being shot down over enemy territory, imprisonment and the uncertainties of liberation. Ground crew and WAAF were expected to accompany their squadron overseas, through enemy infest waters. They are survivors - many of their friends and comrades died - and they live with the consequences of loss, and often with the injuries suffered in combat. Their recollections bring to life the experience of the last generation in British history to endure total war --> Genre: History & Military English
